Daniel Bainbridge

Dr. Bainbridge completed both medical school and an anesthesiology residency program at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He subsequently completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic anesthesia at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Following this he started working at London Health Sciences Centre and was appointed the first Director of Perioperative TEE at LHSC. Over the last 10 years, he has held many positions including Director of Cardiac Anesthesia, Research Chair of Anesthesiology and President of the Canadian Anesthesiologists Society. Currently, he is the Past President of the Canadian Anesthesiologists Society. His publication of greatest impact has been the article, “Perioperative and anaesthetic-related mortality in developed and developing countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis”, published in the Lancet in 2012 which currently has an Altmetric score of 29 with over 150 citations. His current area of research interest is the role of ultrasound in improving patient outcomes for cardiac surgical patients. He was one of the first to examine the role of 3D ultrasound in cardiac surgery and helped develop a virtual reality platform incorporating tracked ultrasound probes and tracked surgical tools to provide augmented reality environments for minimally invasive cardiac surgical procedures. And more recently, published on the use of 3D ultrasound for patient specific mitral valve modelling, a world leader in this field of research.
